You can’t treat an Sapphire the same way you treat a Topaz.
Each gemstone has its own preferences, limitations, and quirks at the bench.
No matter how experienced you are at the bench, there are moments when you need to double-check what a particular gem will tolerate. These quick references are meant to be grabbed before you reach for your tools, giving you clear, practical guidance so you can make informed decisions without interrupting your workflow.
This is not a book, an identification chart, or an academic reference. It’s a tool you can reach for again and again to support your decision-making during bench work.
These guides are designed to be printed at home and organised in whatever way works best for you. Many jewellers like to:
- arrange them in their own order for quick reference.
- use a simple colour-coding system with highlighters, for example red for avoid, orange for use with caution, and green for generally safe.
- store them in plastic sleeves or laminate them to protect against liquids and dirty bench hands.
Another advantage of a print-at-home tool is that if a sheet gets damaged or too dirty, you can simply print another copy.

⚠️ Personal use only
These bench guides are for personal use only. They may not be shared, distributed, or resold, either digitally or in printed form.
Jewellery schools, teaching studios, or educators who would like to provide these guides to students are welcome to e-mail me to discuss licensing options.
❗Final note – These guides reflect common bench practice and known risks, but gemstones can still behave unpredictably. When stone identity or treatment is uncertain, it is always safest to assume the highest-risk scenario.
